Season 01: Final Fantasy IV, Episode 05: The Dark Bargain

(Not The Dark Baigan, because that dude’s already been dealt with.)

In the last episode, Kain offered Cecil Rosa in exchange for the Earth Crystal — if Cecil can get it.  Cecil heads to Troia, a land ruled by ladies (RPG Rabbit approves.) There he learns the Earth Crystal is held by the Dark Elf, a creature particularly vulnerable to metal and so has barricaded himself in a magnetic cave where wielding metal weapons or wearing metal armor renders one paralyzed.  Can Cecil overcome such an obstacle without use of his sword?

This episode also features chocobos.

Season 01: Final Fantasy IV, Episode 03: Ordeals

Cecil and his party lend their aid to Fabul against the encroaching forces of Baron, but when the new commander of the Red Wings appears, it becomes apparent that in order to defeat true evil, Cecil will have to undergo a transformation and rid himself of his own inner darkness.  We’re introduced to more characters here, including an old friend and some noisy brats.

Season 01: Final Fantasy IV, Episode 01: The Fall of a Dark Knight

RPG Rabbit and Calvin Redburn began this project officially on April 6th, 2016 at 4:15 AM. On September 1st, 2016, all those months of hard work has finally culminated into the first official release of our podcast.

Why did it take so long to produce a forty-five minute episode?  Well, we didn’t exactly know what we were doing.  We had never done a podcast before, we didn’t know anything about sound editing, and also for many months we lived a hundred miles away from one another and could only effectively coordinate together on the weekends.

In the meantime, RPG Rabbit was hard at work playing the Playstation 1 release of Final Fantasy IV on her Playstation 3 and creating a script that we would use for the episode.  Calvin Redburn meanwhile was playing the much goofier American SNES release called “Final Fantasy II” on his computer and trying to record sounds and music for use in the project.  When we were able to get together, we recorded lines and then spliced music and sounds into the project using Audacity.  Again, it should be stressed, we didn’t have any experience with this.

After months of trial-and-error and frustration, we were able to produce this first episode.  It’s hard to imagine the amount of hours that went into it, only to produce this amount of material, but so much of that was learning that we believe we have a much better handle on it now.  We are so confident now, in fact, that we can release a new episode twice a month — on the 1st and the 15th.

Today is the 1st of September, the official launch of our podcast series.  Please, subscribe and like us and tweet at us and rate us on iTunes and let everyone know about this project of ours!

Also, along with each episode we will release the script we used.  Most of this was created by RPG Rabbit with a slew of edits and snarky remarks from Calvin.  If you read along you can observe the evolution of this first episode into what it became.

All the music is directly from the game, as are all the sound effects.  All the dialogue spoken is exactly as it was written in-game.  It was very important to us to retain this structure, even if at times the dialogue was awkward or poorly localized.  This is a project created out of love for a classic game, and we are doing our best to showcase it in another medium, rather than transmogrify it into something else entirely.
